About

During winter, the snowmobile serves as your means of transportation deep into the wilderness of Svalbard. Nestled courageously between the majestic Grieg mountain range and the Arctic Ocean, you will discover the Isfjord Radio Adventure Hotel. Located on the edge of the west coast, this is more than just a hotel; it is the very heart of Svalbard. This destination offers the perfect vantage point to observe wildlife and witness the last northern lights before the winter nights give way to daylight. The longer you spend outside of civilization, the greater the likelihood of encountering Svalbard's impressive fauna. Over the course of three days, embark on an exploration of the breathtaking vast landscape alongside your Arctic Nature Guide. Return to a warm and comfortable abode, where your hosts have prepared everything necessary for a satisfying end to a memorable day.

Day 1
10am: Pickup from your hotel/guesthouse in Longyearbyen.

Once all participants have gathered, we proceed to Basecamp Expedition Centre for general information and safety instructions. Here, you will also be provided with snowmobiles and warm winter attire. The journey to Isfjord Radio spans approximately 90-100km, with the exact distance depending on the chosen route. The duration is approximately five hours, accounting for variations in route selection, weather conditions, snow quality, and any stops along the way. Typically, we arrive at Isfjord Radio around 3-4pm. After settling into your room, take some time to relax and explore the hotel's amenities. In the evening, join us in the dining room for a delectable Arctic-inspired menu. Kindly inform us of any allergies prior to the trip.

Day 2
8-10am: Enjoy a hearty breakfast. This day is yours to savor, accompanied by your guide, and expedition lunches will be provided. We are fortunate to visit hidden treasures far removed from civilization. Nothing compares to the exhilaration of traversing the Arctic landscape. Embrace the tranquillity of the silent moments and marvel at the views that will forever beckon you to return. Return to Isfjord Radio after an adventurous day and try out the wilderness sauna perched on the cliff, where you can enjoying the Arctic way of life. Dinner will be served in the dining room, featuring a fresh and enticing menu for the evening.

Day 3
8-10 am: Delight in Isfjord Radio's delectable breakfast. After a restful night's sleep, we prepare for the return journey to Longyearbyen. This is no ordinary transportation, but rather an integral part of the entire adventure. The guide will determine today's route based on prevailing weather conditions and driving circumstances. Leaving the hotel behind at the far end of Kapp Linné, we traverse the magnificent landscape. Amidst the steep Svalbard mountains, frozen lakes, and glaciers, we find ourselves immersed in a world covered with ice and snow. Along the way, we take an extended break for lunch, during which the guide will answer questions and tell you stories from the Arctic. We anticipate arriving back in Longyearbyen in the afternoon.

Driver's license:
Valid driver's license for car or motorcycle required for snowmobiling. This must be presented to the guide before departure. Any snowmobile ride on Svalbard needs at least two snowmobiles without passengers for the trip to be carried out. This is for safety reasons, and if a snowmobile stops, we must have space enough to bring everyone home. We reserve the right to change the number of drivers and passengers in the group if necessary.

Physical requirements:
This trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains or pregnant women. This is due to safety and wellbeing, and Basecamp Explorer can unfortunately not take responsibility for health problems if this advice is neglected

Language:
Safety is our top priority during our trips. It is necessary for you to be able to communicate in English or a Scandinavian language if you want to join our excursions. The tour language (English or a Scandinavian language) will be chosen based on the group's language skills.”

Weather conditions in Svalbard:
In Svalbard, weather conditions can change quickly. We can meet heavy winds, snowstorms, thick fog, crevasses and lack of snow or ice. This means we might need to make changes to the planed route, and this might lead us not arriving to the planned destination. It can also mean that we need to use a different transportation style or accommodation than what was described in the program. We will always do our outmost to give our guests a great experience in the Arctic, but we must be aware that characteristics of the destination.

More than travel:
As part of Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen’s efforts to be climate neutral, we add an additional CO2 and environmental investment of NOK 250* per guest.  This is donated in its entirety to do good projects contributing to a sustainable future in our destinations.
