This snowmobile trip follows the west coast of Spitsbergen. We will drive through terrain that trappers and miners have used for decades. This trip includes a longer stop in Barentsburg, where we will be served a Russian lunch at the hotel.
60 kilometers west of Longyearbyen lies Svalbard’s second largest settlement, Barentsburg. On our way there, we will experience the wild and stunning nature of Svalbard. In Barentsburg, also known as «Little Russia», a statue of Lenin watches over the town and its population. You will soon understand that here, not only the landscape is frozen, but also time. At Hotel Barentsburg, we will enjoy a Russian meal, followed by a tour around the settlement.
On our way to Barentsburg, we will drive through the narrow valleys, Todalen and Bødalen, before we get to the open valley, Colesdalen. If the conditions are good we will pass the abandoned mining town, Coles Bay, before we continue along the coast line to Barentsburg. On our way back, we will drive through the great Grøndalen, and if the weather is nice, we can drive up to the glacier, Tavlebreen, and enjoy the view over Van Mijenfjorden. The trip continues up to the valley, Fardalen, and down to Longyearbyen by the Longyear glacier.
The route might change due to weather and driving conditions. We require a minimum of 2 persons on this trip.
A valid driver’s licence for car or motorbike is required to drive a snowmobile. Remember to take it with you on the tour. The passenger does not need to have a driver’s licence.
