Welcome to Longyearbyen! At arrival, we recommend using the airport bus to Basecamp Hotel. Tickets are sold onboard, payment by cash or card. The bus leaves when everybody has received their luggage and it is approximately 6 km to Longyearbyen and Basecamp Hotel. Once settled in your hotel room, our reception host will help you with a map of Longyearbyen. Let us give you the best advices for an afternoon to get familiar with your hometown for the holiday.
In the never-ending darkness, we will spend the day exploring in the Polar night. After breakfast, at 10.00, our hiking guide will meet you at the hotel reception. Dress well and wear steady shoes for hiking in the snow. Before we head off you get information about the hike, a headlamp, and snowshoes if needed. Always pay attention to the weather conditions on Svalbard, and we recommend to bring a small backpack with some extra clothing. The guide will teach you the principles of snowshoeing and plan the route depending on weather and local conditions in Longyearbyen and surroundings. Expedition lunch will be served during the trip, enjoyed in the mysterious landscape. Retour to the hotel around 15.00.
At 19.00 we will meet in the hotel reception for an evening at Trapper’s Station in Bolterdalen, 10 km outside Longyearbyen. As we drive into the darkness and leave the artificial lights behind, you can only imagine the steep mountains surrounding us. If we are lucky, the northern lights will follow to the Trapper’s Station where dinner is served with stories from a rich history of trappers in the Arctic.
The pulse of Longyearbyen is calm and the last flight has arrived for the holiday. It is Christmas Eve and there are anticipations in the air. In Longyearbyen, the locals go to the church and walk by the red mailbox by coal mine no. 2 – in December the mine is also named “home of Santa Claus” . If there are good snow conditions, we head out for a 4-hour snowmobile excursion in Adventdalen. We will look for the Northern Lights and perhaps you will spot reindeers looking for food on naked spots of tundra. All visitors in Longyearbyen are welcome to the Christmas service in Longyearbyen church this afternoon. Dress up for the celebration and look forward to a delicious Christmas dinner served at Restaurant Polfareren this evening.
Merry Christmas! Wake up to a late breakfast and enjoy a calm morning before the afternoon offers crisp air and dogsledding with headlamps. At noon, your guide will meet you at the hotel reception. Together with the Christmas guests, you head back out to the Trapper’s Station in Bolterdalen. Our 90 friendly Alaskan huskies eager to see you. The guide will introduce the principle of dogsledding and help you to harness your own team. Two persons share one team of 6 huskies and you take turns in driving and being the passenger on the sled. Off we go mushing into Bolterdalen valley. When the Trapper’s station is behind us, we are already in the real wilderness of Spitsbergen. Returning to the station you have gotten to know the dogs and perhaps you already have a favourite team player. Once they are back at their houses and the equipment is tidied up, it is time for cuddles and memories captured in photos. Warm up with hot coffee or tea before heading back to town. This evening Christmas dinner will be served at venerable Huset Restaurant.
Memories are created and new friendships have been built. Today is your last day in the Arctic and breakfast is followed by check out. Reflect on the year and make new plans for 2020. Before departure, you might want to have a last look around this small town on the top of the world, covered by white snow under a dark sky. The airport bus starts from the top of town two hours before flight departure, stopping by all hotels on its way. We wish you safe travel and welcome back for a midnight sun adventure.
