In the 1900s Coles Bay was one of the largest mining towns in Svalbard. More than one thousand people worked and lived there. Today the small town is abandoned, and the houses are left behind to rot.
On this trip we go ashore in Coles Bay, where we will walk around to explore the old buildings and look at the traces of a bygone era. There are 10-12 larger buildings in the area and several ruins. The area also has a rich flora, including cloudberries which otherwise is extremely rare in Svalbard.
If the weather is good, we light a fire on the beach and have a small barbeque before returning to Longyearbyen.
The duration of the trips is 5 hours. Age limit: 14 years.
