To cross Spitsbergen is for many of us the ultimate way to experience the epic nature of Svalbard and learn to live like an arctic explorer. With icy fjords, snow-capped mountains and exciting wildlife, this is an amazing journey. One more to the skiers bucket list!
DAY 1: Attendance at. 8:30 at Basecamp Hotel for the last detail. After that we head towards the east coast with snowmobiles or with the beltwagon. Our starting point will be the bay of Agardh. While we see our transport returns go to Longyearbyen, our guides determine, depending on weather conditions, if we starts to ski west the same day or set up camp in the reign of the Polar bear. Camp life and polar bear watch.
Note: the day before you meet the guide in the reception at Basecamp Hotel at 4 pm to go through program and equipment.
DAY 2: After an exciting night with perhaps your first experience as polar bear guard, we set on skis. Today we aim to start climbing the first glacier of the trip. This is a gentle ascend, a soft start for the trip, where the danger of cracks is very small. We eat lunch halfway and hope to set our second camp in Kjellstrøm valley.
DAY 3-6: We aim for skiing about 20 kilometers every day, and set up camp each night. All of you will be attending in the practical tasks as melting water, making food, putting up the tent and digging lavatories. The guide determines the choice of route depending on weather, wind and snow conditions.
DAY 7: After a week on skis, it does not take many kilometers before we get the first glimpse Isfjord Radio in the distance, and thus the end of the trip in the horizon. We ski along the beach, and if we are lucky, we might see walrus on our way. Upon our arrival Isfjord Radio, we are greeted like royalty – the arctic explorers have made it to the finish line! The cozy surroundings of the hotel is unique and exceptionally luxurious after one week in the tents. After a shower, it is time for a stately dinner and it gets a good night sleep in real bed.
DAY 8: We wake up at Isfjord Radio, and after breakfast, we will be picked up by our logistics department for return to Longyearbyen and civilization in the afternoon. Dinner on own initiative in the evening, with impressions and sled full of memories.
