During two long days, this trip offers a concentrated Svalbard experience. As a part of a small group, you will travel over the vast glaciers to the east coast of Spitsbergen and Mohnbukta. In the realm of polar bears, you will feel truly alone in the great wilderness far from civilisation. We will spend the night in our simple “trappers’ cabin” in Fulmardalen, quite similar to how the old trappers lived. The next day, we will yet again travel towards the east coast and the realm of polar bears. Today, our goal is Agardbukta before we return to Longyearbyen. This trip is carried out in small groups of maximum 6 participants.
Day 1:
After breakfast, at 08:30, you will be picked up by the guide at your choice of accommodation, who will take you to our storage for a briefing. This gives you the opportunity to get to know the other participants as we prepare and pack for our trip. We will brief you on the planned route, and give you an update on the weather forecast. Equipment and luggage are strapped to the sledges, and we provide solid and warm snowmobile suits. We estimate to start our journey from Longyearbyen at 11:00. Today’s journey will bring us through Adventdalen and Sassendalen. In a side valley to Sassendalen, we will find our”trappers’ cabin”. After a short stop at the cabin, we will head northeast over a glacier plateau and down into Mohnbukta. On the ice, there is a possibility that we get to see polar bears, and ever so often we will stop to look for polar bears and seals. A long day on snowmobiles through an arctic wonderland will end in our trappers’ cabin in Fulmardalen. We will make dinner and get ready for the night in a warm and safe room.
Day 2:
Our last day in the arctic wilderness offers a new possibility to head to the east coast via a different route than yesterday. Today, we will drive straight east to Agardhbukta. We will get out on the ice on Storfjorden some miles further south than yesterday, and will again look for wildlife on the ice. If weather permits, we will return to Longyearbyen via Svea and the Paula Glacier in Van Mijenfjorden. Estimated arrival in Longyearbyen is 17:00.
General information:
The execution of the trip may vary some from the description. Due to weather conditions, we may choose to drive longer or shorter trips than what has been described for each day. There is a fairly high chance of seeing polar bears on the trip, but we can not issue any form of guarantee. The guide will at all times evaluate and adjust the route according to the weather and snow conditions.
