Accommodation off the beaten track
Cabin life in Svalbard may be summed up in short with three words. Simple Arctic luxury.
Out in the wilderness of Svalbard you will find a small amount of charming wilderness cabins. Not a lot of them, but a few.
Most of the cabins are far off the beaten track, and are reserved for those who are willing to take that extra step into nature and a simpler lifestyle. If you do take this step you’ll be offered a very unique luxury to a weary traveller. Silence.
And to be more specific, it is the Arctic silence we’re talking about. Though it wouldn’t be completely right to call it silence, as Arctic silence is more about trading everyday sounds for Arctic sounds. The buzz from a large crowd of people is replaced by the howls coming from a pack of sled dogs. Random notification chimes on your phone telling you that you’ve got a new text message or email, disappear as you lose phone reception on your way into the wilderness, enabling you to hear the faint sound of snow drifting across the landscape. Your focus is removed from your phone and shifted to the experiences around you, such as the simple joy of observing a leisurely Svalbard reindeer chewing away at something underneath the snow.
In this idyllic setting there are also certain sounds that are far from relaxing, although they are most definitely exotic. In the Svalbardian wilderness you’re merely a visitor in the realm of the polar bear, who while roaming the archipelago may catch on to an interesting smell coming from a cabin and head over to investigate. The sniffles from a curious bear snout and the thuds of bear paws pushing on the cabin wall may then become part of this Arctic sound mix. If you don’t know what to do in a situation like that, it’s comforting to have a Svalbardian guide with you who does. When visiting one of the cabins you’ll always be accompanied by a guide who can ensure that you’ll stay safe.
The wilderness cabins that you’ll find on this page are only possible to reach by joining an organised tour with the local activity providers in Svalbard, who will make sure that you can stay safe while enjoying the Arctic silence.
A tour to one of these cabins will give you a unique Svalbardian experience. Adventures, dining, and accommodation, all in one package.
