Svalbard operates under a special administrative regime that differs from mainland Norway. The Svalbard Treaty and the Svalbard Act form the basis for this unique legal framework, meaning that many Norwegian laws do not directly apply to the archipelago. Currently, Chapter 3 of the Equality and Anti-Discrimination Act concerning universal design and individual accommodation, as well as Sections 24, 25, and 26 on active equality efforts, do not apply to Svalbard and Jan Mayen.
Although Svalbard’s special administrative regime exempts it from legal requirements for universal design, there are still measures and services in place that make it possible for people with special needs to have a memorable and comfortable experience here.
