Visit Svalbard's various attractions
In Longyearbyen there are several places that are worth a visit, like Svalbard Church, The North Pole Expedition Museum, Svalbard Museum, and Nordover.
Svalbard Church is open at all hours and offer service every Sunday. Every Tuesday there is coffee and waffles for sale in the church lounge, where you can sit down and have a talk with the local people.
Svalbard Museum, Norway’s arctic museum, farthest north, received the Council of Europe Museum Prize for 2008 competing against 59 other museums around Europe. The exhibition presents fragments of Svalbard's 400-year history and describes factors that help support life and the activities taking place here, which together reveal the close relationship between sea and land, nature and cultural history.
We also recommend you visit the North Pole Expedition Museum (earlier known as Spitsbergen Airship Museum). The purpose of the museum is to impart the history and importance three airships have had in the Arctic: America, Norge and Italia.
A very characteristic building is located on Skjæringa, the funicular center. In earlier times the transportation of coal in Longyearbyen took place by the funicular system. This center was the junction for the transportation between the different mines.
