Get around in Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen is a small town, and walking around downtown Longyearbyen is a wonderful experience. There are also two taxi companies ready to take you around town, into the valley, between the town centre and Nybyen, and to the airport. Longyearbyen Taxi and Svalbard Bus and Taxi are at your service 24/7.
Svalbard Buss and Taxi can also offer bus services.

There is an airport shuttle bus that stops at all the hotels and guesthouses in town. During the Polar Summer, you can borrow bicycles at the Tourist Information Centre, while Arctic Autorent is the town's car rental (located at the airport).

To operate a car, snowmobile or ATV in Svalbard, you must hold a valid driving licence. A Category B licence (passenger car) is accepted. For snowmobiles, licences in categories A, A1, A2, or S (snowmobile) may also be accepted.

The driving licence must be issued by a country that is a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention or the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Digital driving licences are only valid if they are issued in Norway. All driving licences from EU/EEA countries meet these requirements.

If your driving licence is issued outside the EU/EEA, you are responsible for checking whether it complies with the model requirements of one of the conventions. If it does not, you must, in addition to your driving licence, carry documentation that meets the requirements described on the Norwegian Public Roads Administrations pages here.
