Longyearbyen is surrounded by majestic mountains. There are many guided hikes to choose between, from reaching summits to exploring valleys. Some are short and suitable for everyone, while others are more physically demanding. No matter which hiking trip you choose, you are assured of a fantastic experience with an experienced guide and wonderful views.
You can combine a hiking trip with a photographic expedition or what about exciting fossil hunting? You can find 60-million-year-old plant fossils in Svalbard, which make a great souvenir to take home. Your guide will gladly inform you about Svalbard’s history and geology during a biscuit and drinks break in the detailed terrain. Learn more about the flora and fauna and take a closer look at various rock formations. On some hikes, you will be joined by pack dogs, while other hikes include a visit to Longyearbyen’s dog yards.
From the top of the popular Plateau Mountain (400 metres above sea level), you can enjoy a panoramic view of beautiful Longyearbyen, while if you choose to join a guided hike to Blomsterdalshøgda you will see the famous Global Seed Vault. If you choose a slightly longer hike to Trollsteinen, you will have the opportunity to cross a glacier and explore a fascinating moraine landscape. You can also choose a hike that concludes with a delicious dinner or lunch around an open fire.
In the wintertime, you can also choose snowshoeing. Join us on a guided snowshoeing trek across a frozen glacier landscape and enjoy the peace and tranquillity. Another option is going on a snowshoeing trek in the Polar Night to chase the Northern Lights, an evening activity you will never forget. If you want to experience walking on a glacier, you can put on snowshoes and visit an ice cave.
No matter which hike you choose, don’t forget to wear suitable footwear and bring your camera!
