Built during the mid-20th century as part of Longyearbyen's renaissance, it served as an assembly hall or "forsamlingshus."
Built on neutral ground, away from the town's other buildings where the class divide between officials and miners was strong, Huset has hosted numerous events and services over the years.

For various reasons, Huset has been – and continues to be – an institution in Longyearbyen.
It has served as a post office, school, church, and cinema at different times, making it a pivotal location for many events.
Today, Huset remains a preferred venue for events and is also a must-visit for culinary enthusiasts
