Spitsbergen Marathon is a popular race which attracts long-distance runners from Norway and many other countries. Runners from all over the world gather in Longyearbyen on the first weekend of June each year to run the world's northernmost marathon on firm ground.
Runners can choose between three distances: marathon, half marathon and Spitsbergenmila (10 km). The course for the full marathon is two rounds of the half marathon route. The surface is a mixture of gravel and asphalt.
The Spitsbergen Marathon starts in the centre of Longyearbyen and the route leads the runners through a majestic landscape dominated by Arctic nature and remnants from the mining industry. The risk of polar bears during the race means that special attention is attached to safety. Armed polar bear guards will be stationed along the route.
