A local favourite since 1979
If you’re about to visit Longyearbyen, you should learn the word “Lørdagsbiff”!
The Saturday Steak – “Lørdagsbiffen” – at Huset Bistro is long tradition among the locals in Longyearbyen. Every Saturday afternoon, the bistro is packed with people of all ages and backgrounds.
The concept is genius: You order your meat at the bar, and then you help yourself with potatoes, fries and two kinds of sauce at the buffet. You can eat as much potatoes and sauce as you like.
Huset has been serving locals and travelers this popular meal since 1979. The story behind it is lovely: Every Monday, the coal miners were served fish in the dining hall. However, the miners were not particularly excited to be served fish. The chef at Huset therefore came up with steak as an alternative, which the miners called “Monday Steak”. The tradition has since then lived on, but has in recent years changed into a Saturday event. The Saturday Steak is served all year round, between 12 pm and 5 pm.
