Saturday Steak at Huset!

If you’re about to visit Longyearbyen you should learn the word «Lørdagsbiff»!

A long tradition among locals in Longyearbyen is the Saturday Steak «Lørdagsbiffen» at Huset Bistro. Packed with people of all ages every Saturday afternoon, Huset has been serving locals and travelers the popular meal since the 1979.

The story behind the steak is very simple. Every Monday it was served fish to the coal miners in the eating hall, but the miners was not particularly excited to be served fish, so the chef at Huset come up with steak as an alternative. The miners called it Monday steak. The tradition lives on and has in recent years been served as Saturday's steak every Saturday, all year around between 4 pm and 6 pm.

The concept is genuis: You order your meat at the bar, and then you help your self with potatoes, fries and two kinds of sauce at the bufeet. Remember you can eat as much potatoes and sauce as you like!
 
Huset Restaurant and Bistro is an «institution» in Svalbard. It was built in the 50’s by the mining company, Store Norske Kullkompani. Huset, or «the house”, was centrally place in the valley between the different quarters of Longyearbyen, and it was therefore called “the city's heart”. It was neutral to the class divide within the mining community, as it was established to be a place for both the miners and officials of the mining company.

In the beginning (from 1951) the building served as a communal meeting house. It has since functioned as post office, a hospital and a school. Today Huset Restaurant is renowned for its world-class kitchen, where use of ingredients exclusive to the High Arctic is the focus, while Huset Bistro has a more laid back athomshere offering a à la carte menu which is based on traditional home cooking dishes from the nordic countries. 
 
The atmosphere at Huset is really unique and the walls are filled with history. A visit to Huset is a must for most travelers coming to Svalbard. And it’s just as popular among the locals – especially the Lørdagsbiff!
