Shh! What’s that sound? Nothing. It is just arctic silence. As you press the gas, your snowmobile silently starts moving, while it lights up the dark polar night. No sound of a roaring engine. The only thing to be heard is "the Arctic silence". The sound of absolutely nothing.
It is time to experience the fascinating polar night in a whole new way – with an electric snowmobile!
Aurora all day
Our electrical snowmobile northern lights safari is one of the most exotic ways to experience Svalbard. In a silent stream of light, we drive through the Advent Valley, in search of the northern lights. Here it is only us and the never-ending darkness of the polar night.
Far away from the city with all its artificial lights, the chances of seeing northern light is greater. From early November to the end of January it is possible to see them around the clock – even in the middle of the day. During the day the northern lights are a little fainter than in the night, but with a more reddish tint it is a mesmerizing sight!
Electric snow mobile
Our new snowmobiles run with electrical engines that are completely quiet. This makes them less disruptive to the wildlife, compared to ordinary snowmobiles. So, as well as looking to the sky for northern lights, remember to look around you. We often see the Svalbard reindeer, ptarmigans and polar foxes on these trips.
Included in the snow mobile trip:
- Transfer from hotel/accommodation place in Longyearbyen
- Warm drinks and biscuits
- Snowmobile suit, gloves, shoes and helmet to use during the tour
- Tour leader with safety sled and weapons
- Rescue insurance
- Practical information for snow mobile trip
Driver’s licence requirements
To drive a snowmobile, a valid car or motorbike driver’s licence is mandatory—don’t forget to bring it with you! Before the tour begins, our guide will verify all licences. Please ensure your licence is valid for use in Svalbard and Jan Mayen. If you’re uncertain, we recommend contacting the relevant authorities in advance. Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds if a licence is deemed invalid.
What to wear
Staying warm is key to enjoying your Arctic adventure! Dress in woollen layers, including woollen underwear, warm trousers, and a sturdy wool jumper under your snowmobile suit. Packing a small backpack with extra clothing—such as an additional jacket, a woollen hat, and mittens—is also a great idea. Being prepared for Svalbard’s chilly conditions ensures you’ll be comfortable and ready for anything.
Safety guidelines
Your safety is our highest priority. Snowmobile driving is not recommended for pregnant women, and driving under the influence of alcohol is strictly prohibited, as the Road Traffic Act (Vegtrafikkloven) applies on Svalbard.
Weather and snow conditions on Svalbard can be unpredictable. For this reason, we may adjust the tour route or destination to ensure the safety of all participants. While changes might be necessary, they will not affect the tour price. Additionally, tour leaders will not carry passengers on their snowmobiles.
Language requirement
As your safety is our top priority, clear communication is essential. To join one of our excursions, it is required that you can speak and understand either English or one of the Scandinavian languages. This ensures you can follow the guide's directions and fully enjoy your experience.
Expert guides
Explore Svalbard with confidence, led by our expert guides who bring a wealth of experience and training. Many have completed the Arctic Nature Guide programme, while others are certified mountain or glacier guides, or hold Svalbard Guide Training (SGO) certification. This certification includes rigorous training in safe travel, tourism practices, and environmental and cultural stewardship.
To maintain the highest standards, our guides receive ongoing training and regularly participate in safety drills throughout the year. With Hurtigruten Svalbard, you’re in the safest hands as you embark on your Arctic adventure.
