We step into the polar night and put on our head torch, before getting ready to embark on a hike out of the ordinary. The snow and the moon illuminate the landscape, and you might not even feel the need to use a head torch if the moon is especially bright.
Meet your Arctic nature guide in the hotel reception at 10am. We head southwards to the glacier situated between the summits of Trollsteinen and Lars Hierta. We leave Longyearbyen behind and soon enter a frozen landscape. This is a great place to enjoy a magnificent view of the northernmost town in the world. It is hard to imagine that a frozen world of winding walls of ice, secret rooms and narrow tunnels hides beneath the snow-covered ground. We will soon explore the beautiful meltwater channels and ice caves in Svalbard. Join us on a hiking experience out of the ordinary and explore the inside of a glacier.
Included:
- 5-hour hike with an Arctic nature guide
- Head torch
- Warm drinks and snacks
- The guide picks you up at your hotel or guesthouse in Longyearbyen
Important information:
Note that there will be an elevation gain from Longyearbyen to the ice cave, and that walking on snow can prove to be a bit more challenging. Dress warmly with wool thermals as an inner layer and a wind/waterproof outer layer. Several layers of wool or fleece are recommended, so you can easily take on and off clothes to regulate your body temperature. Make sure to bring a down jacket / primaloft to wear during breaks. A warm hat is also important, and so is a buff to protect your face and neck, and warm, windproof mittens. Sturdy and waterproof shoes are a must. On this tour you need to bring a bottle of water and a packed lunch. We recommend bringing a 30 litre day pack.
