Store Norske Gruve 3 AS

Store Norske Gruve 3 AS offers guided tours in one of Longyearbyen's closed coal mines. 

Gruve 3 (Mine Number 3) was operated from 1971-1996 and is one of several mines under state ownership through Store Norske Spitsbergen Coal Company. The mine height was 60-90 cm which led to old-fashioned methods being applied to excavate the coal. 

Although the mine was operated in modern times, the methods belong to another era. A visit to Gruve 3 gives an insight into today's coal mining industry as well as 100 years ago.
