Most of the people living in Longyearbyen are devoted to spend as much time as possible outdoors. With the Arctic wilderness just outside our doorstep, we long for fresh air and physical activity, with or without our four legged friends.

One of the most Jan Sivert Hauglid popular hikes is “Byrunden”, also known as "The Town Circuit". This is a good hike to meet locals and pass some of the most iconic buildings in Longyearbyen along the way. You don’t need to worry about polar bear protection, because the outlines of "The Town Circuit" are within the safe area. The round is approximately 8 kilometers and takes you around our little arctic city. On your way you will get a closer look at the Svalbard Church, Taubanesentralen (the ropeway central), the legendary Huset, and the mountains surrounding us.  You can start the walk from the city center and go towards Nybyen, then via Huset and Skjæringa, back to the city center.

There are also several beautiful hikes up the mountains surrounding Longyearbyen, just remember to book an organized trip with a guide (that will take care of your safety) ifMarcela Cardenas you want to try them.

We recommend you to end your city walk with a coffee or a lunch at some of the cosy cafees and restaurants in town. At Fruene you can enjoy amazing salads, soups and sandwiches. Or how about a tapas plate in the athmospheric reception at Svalbard Hotel, in front of the fireplace? Or a cup of hot chocolate at Svalbar?

Whatever you choose, don’t forget your camera!
