* Last day of booking 14 days before the expedition
On this trip you will experience the real Svalbard. With your own dog team you will cross over to the east coast of Spitsbergen. The trip will go through wide valleys, over large glaciers and on sea ice. The goal of the trip is the magnificent Inglefield Bay which is surrounded by glacier fronts. Most of the trip is in areas with limited or total ban on motorized traffic.
You can descide to travel alone or 2 per sled on our special-made double sleds. These are great to travel with: you stand behind each other and each of you has a brake so that one of you can take pictures, or quickly run to the dogs if something happens while the other stands on the brake and has control on the dogs. Very social and safe way to travel. Guests sleep 2 and 2 together in our very robust expedition tents. In addition, we have a heated larger basecamp tent for meals, coziness and for drying clothes and equipment. For day to day program see below.
We at Arctic Husky Travellers will make sure that your long trip will be a memory for life. We have over 20 years of experience from dog sledding and expeditions in Arctic areas. We have driven the longest dog sled races in Alaska and Europe and have even been to the North Pole with our dogs.
The weather in the Arctic is unpredictable and can change within a few hours. With both cold and wind, temperatures can quickly drop to -10°C even in May, but normally the last two weeks of April and the first two weeks of May are the best time for winter expeditions in Svalbard with 24 hours of daylight, stable, nice weather, and notable heat from the sun during the day.
You do not need any previous experience from dog sledding to participate, but you should be in average to good physical shape and have experience with outdoor activities. There will be 2 days of training and preparation at the start of the trip which includes a day trip with dog sled to the ice cave at Scott Turner to get familar with the expedition clothing and the dogs. Day 2 of training you will learn how to set up tent camp and camp routines. On day 2 we will also set aside time to explore Longyearbyen and do the last shopping for the long expedition.
Program:
Day 0 – Arrival in Longyearbyen and we will take you out to our dog farm in Bolterdalen about 12 km from Longyearbyen. Here we will great our huskies and we will present the expedition plan, equipment, safety and routines. Expedition clothing and equipment will be handed out. Dinner will be served in the evening.
Day 1 – We will get dresseed up in the expedition clothing and get introduced to the sleds and dogs. We harness the dogs and drive to the ice cave at Scott Turner. Here we will learn how to put the dogs on a night-line and after lunch we explore the ice cave. Thereafter we place the dogs in front of the sled again and head back to the kennel.
Day 2 - We exercise on how to set up a tent camp and coock on a primus stove etc, and do the final packing of the sleds. After lunch we visit Longyearbyen for some sightseeing and final shopping if neccessary. We set aside time to visit the museum.
Day 3 - Departure towards the East Coast aiming to reach Reindalen for the first camp (see map image)
Day 4-6 - Trip to the East Coast where the route is adjusted according to weather, snow and sea ice conditions. We can choose between many different variants. See the attached map of different route options. Once on the East Coast, we will spend time exploring the area. Here we are in the core polar bear land so we have to be careful when exploring the nice scenary with beautiful glacier fronts, and glaciers pieces frozen into the sea ice like beautiful sculptures.
Day 7-9 We start the return trip, and stop by the majestic Martabreen – one of the most beautiful glacier portals in Svalbard where we in winter can go in and look at all the beautiful ice and snow crystal formations. Thereafter we continue to our cozy and comfortable cabin in Tverrdalen “Reinheim”, where we can enjoy a nice dinner, sauna and good beds on our last night out. After a long breakfast we pack the sleds for the last time and head over Bolterskaret back home to our dog kennel in Bolterdalen. We say goodbye to the dogs and drive you back to your accommodation in town and enjoy one last dinner at one of Longyearbyen’s restaurants.
Day 10 – After a good breakfast the journey goes to the airport and return home.
