Discover the stories, flavours and traditions of Longyearbyen on an atmospheric evening walk through the heart of the Arctic. From historic landmarks to local cuisine, this experience reveals how people have lived, worked and built a community on Svalbard through generations of darkness.
Explore Longyearbyen after dark
The polar night transforms Svalbard into a world of stillness, starlit skies and unforgettable atmosphere. On this guided walking experience, you'll discover the history and culture of Longyearbyen through the places that have defined life in the High Arctic.
Your evening begins at Funken Lodge, where drinks and king crab canapés are served while your guide introduces the island's fascinating mining history and the people who helped shape this remote settlement.
From there, you'll stroll through Longyearbyen beneath the winter sky, stopping at significant landmarks as your guide shares stories of Arctic exploration, everyday life during months without sunlight, and the traditions that continue to define the community today.
The next stop is Huset, one of Longyearbyen's most iconic buildings. Here, you'll enjoy a tasting inspired by Svalbard, featuring locally brewed kombucha and a selection of Arctic cured meats while learning more about the building's remarkable history and its place in local life.
The experience concludes at Coal Miners' Cabins, where a roaring bonfire, hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows provide the perfect ending to the evening. Gather around the fire as the final stories are told before making your way back through the peaceful polar night.
More than a guided walk, this is an opportunity to experience the people, history and flavours that make Svalbard unlike anywhere else in the world.
