Join us on an exciting rib boat tour, that combines birds and wildlife with Svalbard’s rich cultural history. Your guide will pick you up at the hotel and drive you to our expedition centre. Here you will be equipped with a flotation suit and goggles, before we continue down to the harbour.
A short boat ride in Isfjorden takes us to Fuglefjella. These mountains serve as home to thousands of birds every summer. One of the most popular species is the Brünnich's guillemot, which nests in colonies of over 100,000 pairs in several locations. At the bird cliffs, it becomes clear how life on land and in the sea interact, and you will observe a multitude of birds returning to their young with small fish and crustaceans.
We continue the tour to the abandoned Russian mining settlement of Grumant, which was abandoned in 1961-62. It is almost incomprehensible that the dilapidated houses clinging to the mountainside today were once one of the largest settlements on Svalbard. Her we will take a moment to take in the mystical ambience and mining history, before we continue to Hiorthamn, which is located directly opposite Longyearbyen in the Adventfjorden.
Hiorthamn is also a former mining town with barracks, forge, warehouse, kitchen, sawmill, hospital, homes, offices and several mining facilities. Here, the imagination has to work a little to be able to imagine the busy life that once existed. If time and weather conditions permit, we will go ashore and enjoy something hot to drink at the beach.
Included:
- Transport to and from accommodation in Longyearbyen
- Exposure suit for the duration of the tour
- Warm drinks/biscuits

Please note that the tour is in an open boat, and you may experience bumpy seas and sea spray.
