We drive out with a closed RIB to Billefjorden and the Nordenskiöld glacier in scenic and historic surroundings on Svalbard.
Svalbard has a unique bird life with relatively few species, but many individuals that nest in the mountain areas around the fjord. On the trip we can see the king eider, polar guillemots, puffins, various seagulls, and the little auk, to name a few. It is the nutrient-rich water by the glaciers, as well as more and more fish heading northwards, that attract the birds to us.
At Skansebukta, there was previously a gypsum quarry, but today it is a protected area for cultural monuments. The location with the high mountains that surround the bay provide good growing conditions for plants, such as Northern Jacob's Ladder.
The hunter Peder Nilsen Furfjord spent the winter in Skansebukta in 1904-1905 but left there after his wife died during the stay. His wife Hansine's grave still stands as a memory from a previous life on Svalbard. And Peder himself never traveled back again after the tragedy in Skansebukta.
The Nordenskiöld Glacier is a beautiful sight where it lies between Dickson land and Bünslow land. At the height, the two nunataks, the Terrier and Perrier mountains protrude from the glacier. Small icebergs and flakes float in the sea after the glacier’s calving, and if you listen carefully, you will be able to hear the ice crackling, as tiny explosions. It is the air bubbles in the ice that burst and make the sound. Remember binoculars, because if you are extra lucky you may see some of the unique wildlife on Svalbard.
On this trip, max capacity is 12 pax. The boat is smaller and faster than the larger boats and has both heating and toilet on board.
NB! Early in the season, there may be too much ice in Billefjorden for us to get all the way to the Nordenskiöld glacier. There is still a lot to explore in the area, and hopefully we will encounter the wildlife that often bustles at this time of year.
