We begin our adventure at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, south-west side of Longyearbyen. While the Vault itself is closed to the public, standing before its striking entrance is an experience in its own right. In summer, the structure blends almost seamlessly into the rugged terrain; in winter, its dramatic light installation shines like a beacon against the polar night.
Your guide will share the story behind this global treasure and explain its important role in safeguarding the world’s food crops for future generations. As we venture beyond Longyearbyen’s safety zone, the journey takes on a true sense of wilderness with Arctic landscapes surrounding us.
From the Seed Vault, we continue with a short hike up the mountainside above Blomsterdalen.
The trail includes some steeper sections as we climb up to 400 metres above sea level.
With each step higher, the views become more spectacular.
Along the way, we pause to take a look at the panoramas across Adventfjorden. On clear days, the landscape stretches far into the distance, revealing the vast waters of Isfjorden and the glacier-covered mountains beyond. If conditions allow, we may continue along the ridgeline, where the open terrain adds an extra sense of adventure and exposure to the wild Arctic environment.
The route also offers a glimpse into Svalbard’s mining heritage. As we hike, your guide will share stories from the archipelago’s coal-mining history, adding another layer to the landscape around us.
