Season (13 Mar 2023 - 5 May 2023)

* Fully booked for 2022

To step outside Longyearbyen will open a door to the wilderness. On this trip, you will not only visit the wilderness, but you will live and feel the Arctic around you. Two nights in a tent will give you the real feel what the arctic is about. Once entering Isfjord Radio you will be surprised. The contrast between surrounding rough coastal landscape and the modern luxury hotel inside is a sight to behold. It is easy to forget where you are.

The day before departure, meet the guide in the reception at Basecamp Hotel to go through the program and equipment at 15:00.

Day 1
Your guide will pick you up at your hotel at 10 am. You will get a briefing before packing the personal items and heading towards the Trappers Station in Bolterdalen. Here you will meet all our 80 happy Alaskan Huskies eager to get on the trip. The guide will show you how to harness the dogs and how to mush your own team. Everyone will take care of your own team with guidance from the guide. You will harness, feed and look after your own dogs. Then we head off in the white, open landscape towards Isfjord Radio. We will make expedition lunch in the field. We will set camp approximately half way to Isfjord, were we have a nice warm meal in the tent after a long day with dog sledding. Note! You will meet the guide in the reception at 4 pm the day before to go through program and equipment.
Dinner and overnight in tent.

Day 2
Breakfast for both people and dogs before packing the camp and heading out in the white nature again. The panting of the dogs and the scraping of the sled runners against the snow is the only thing that break the complete silence. Dog sledging at Svalbard is an experience that touches your soul. Expedition lunch served in the field. Today we will arrive at Isfjord Radio, where the hosts welcome us and tell us more about the fascinating history of the station. The kitchen invites us to a 3-course dinner in the evening.
Accommodation in double rooms at Isfjord Radio.

Day 3
After a solid breakfast, we will go for a short dog sledge trip before we return to the station for a warm lunch. The hosts will give a guided tour around the station area. For the toughest ones, we encourage to go for a swim in the Arctic Ocean followed by a warm sauna!
3-course dinner and accommodation in double rooms at Isfjord Radio.

Day 4
After a substantial breakfast it is time to say goodbye to Isfjord Radio and spend the day with the dogs. We head back towards civilization and make a number of interesting stops along the way. If weather and snow conditions allow it, we make an alternative route back. Some areas may challenge you, but the trip will give you a fantastic experience of the nature in Spitsbergen. After a long day dogsledding we make camp, feed the dogs and make dinner for ourselves. In the evening, it is nice to crawl down in a warm sleeping bag for a good night sleep.
Accommodation in tent.

Day 5
Today we head back to Longyearbyen, enjoy the final day dogsledding. During the afternoon we arrive back at Trappers Station, harness the dogs and thank them or the trip.

- Accommodation, meals & activities according to program.

In addition: Flight tickets, airport shuttle, drinks with meals and accommodation in Longyearbyen

Note: In Spitsbergen, weather conditions can change quickly. This means we might need to make changes to the planed route, and this might lead to us not arriving to the planned destination. It can also mean that we need to use a different transportation style or accommodation than what was described in the program.
During longer dogsledding trips, you need to be in good physical condition. As part of the expedition, you will participate in taking care of the dogs and setting up camp.
You will be provided with a warm thermos-suit, winter boots, balaclava, hat, gloves and googles. We recommend bringing light windproof jacked and trousers for mild temperatures. A pair of working gloves is also good to have when handling the dogs.

As part of Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen's efforts to be climate neutral, we are adding a CO2 and environmental investment to our overnight trips. The amount is donated in its entirety to good projects that contribute to a sustainable future at our destinations.
