Svalbard’s summer season brings along a bustling gathering of wildlife and birdlife to the area around Isfjorden, and we’ll head out to experience all it has to offer. Join us on our open RIB boat for a day trip without a fixed destination, but with the goal of experiencing Svalbard’s wildlife!
Our guide will pick you up from your accommodation in Longyearbyen and bring you to our activity centre for a briefing on the plan for today’s trip, expected sea and weather conditions, as well as for a handout of the equipment for the trip. After suiting up you’ll head over to our open RIB boat in Longyearbyen’s port for a safety briefing on board before you set off out onto Isfjorden. This trip does not have a fixed destination and is instead adapted to the conditions of each day and according to the seasonal changes in which wildlife and birdlife we’ll have a higher chance of observing.
Isfjorden and its surrounding landscape is home to bird cliffs with nesting sea birds, whales, seals and walruses through the summer. There’s always a chance that you might catch a glimpse of a polar bear by pure chance out in Svalbard’s wilderness, but the leading principles for wildlife observations on our trips is that we never seek out polar bears, that observations should not violate rules and regulations in place to protect Svalbard’s wildlife, and that we will always do our best to avoid disturbing wildlife.
The magic in wildlife and birdlife observations in Svalbard lies in getting the chance to experience these fascinating wild animals in their natural habitat, but that also means there’s no guarantee that you’ll see any specific wildlife or birds while out on the trip.
No matter where our guide will lead you on this trip there’ll be a longer stop to enjoy a nice warm expedition lunch with some hot drinks and cookies, as long as the conditions allow. The key to maximising your chances of observing wildlife is to spend as much time out in the wild as possible, so keep your eyes open even while enjoying your lunch.
When it’s time to head back to Longyearbyen our guide will sail back to port and bring you back to our activity centre for a debrief and review of today’s adventure before driving you back to your accommodation in town.
