Nordover invites you to a presentation and conversation about SpareBank 1's Svalbard project, with a focus on coal prints.
The settlement of Grumantbyen on Svalbard was established and named in the 1920s by the mining company Anglo-Russian Grumant Company, Ltd. The company had its headquarters in London and issued local banknotes for use in Grumantbyen. The text from one such note has been reproduced and transformed into art: prints in a limited edition, printed in shades of black using pulverised coal from the now-closed Mine 3 in Longyearbyen. The lettering on the prints is derived from a 'Soviet-style' font called Grumant Bold.
On Friday 8 August at 6 p.m., project initiator Morten Søberg (SpareBank 1) and graphic designer Ørjan Ingvaldsen (Haltenbanken) will discuss this art project with Julie Lillelien Porter at the Nordover Art Centre.
The bar will be open, and there will be an opportunity to purchase these unique prints!
