Longyearbyen was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. Nybyen was built shortly afterwards. Today, Nybyen is 80 years old, making it the oldest continuously operating district in Longyearbyen and the surrounding area.
During the day, we will share knowledge about the past and present of Nybyen and discuss its future. There will be several panel discussions on topics of interest, as well as a historical walk and a pop-up exhibition by Eva Grøndal, presenting photographs of Nybyen.
The event will be held mainly in Norwegian, with some talks in English.
The event is primarily aimed at the local community; however, it is open to the public and will be of great interest to history lovers.
Throughout the day, the Spitsbergen Artists Center will remain open until 18:00, and all Nybyen enthusiasts are welcome to spend time there—talking with each other, visiting the Artists Center, and enjoying the Old Town of Longyearbyen.
