Let love blossom!

Bring your loved one on a date in the world’s northernmost city! Here are Longyearbyen’s most romantic spots:

Burmaveien with a beautiful view of Isfjorden

How about walking hand in hand from Taubanesentralen (the ropeway central) towards the airport, whilst the sunset colors the sky red and orange above majestic mountains and glaciers? The view is fantastic, with a total of five glaciers and umpteen mountain peaks on the other side of Isfjorden. You might come upon both Svalbard reindeer and the polar fox, as well as seeing birds and flowers in the summer months.

Be aware: If you walk further than the city harbor you are entering an area where you need polar bear protection.

Taubanesentralen, the historical ropeway central

Taubanesentralen – The ropeway central is by itself a mesmerizing place to be. It is majestically placed in the area Skjæringa, above the city on the verge of the city limits. The views are out of this world, with fjords and mountains in every direction. Cable way bucks and coal wagons is an everlasting reminder of the mining which still is an important part of Longyearbyen and its history. Sunrises and sunsets are mirrored in the windows of this monumental building, as well as in the quiet water of the fjord.

The height water basin on top of town

From the centre of Longyearbyen follow the road Vei 232 from Radisson BLU Polar Hotel up towards the mountain Sukkertoppen. Above the top row of houses continue to walk to the end of the road, where the height water basin can be found. From here you get an amazing view of both fjord, mountains and tundra – to the east along Adventdalen valley, to the west towards Isfjorden along Adventfjorden, and towards the mountain ranges on the other side of the valley. Light, darkness, skies, sun, stars, moon light and wind make this an ever-changing experience.

Sjøområdet, the barbeque area on the beach

Only a few minutes’ walk from UNIS you find the barbeque area by Adventfjorden. Walk towards the fjord by Jason Roberts Productions after crossing the Longyearelva river. Surprise your loved one with hot dogs on a thermos, a portable barbeque or hot cocoa and enjoy the view! You will find a lounge built out of wood pallets and several places to sit, and it’s all available to guests and permanent residents at any time. Please remember to clean up after yourselves and use the garbage containers and garbage cans situated nearby or towards the city center.

Svalbard church

In the part of town called Skjæringa you will find several great view points, among others from Svalbard church. From here you can see the cable way bucks situated along the Longyeardalen valley towards the Longyearbreen glacier to the south, as well as along the Adventdalen valley towards the east. The city can be seen in a bird perspective, and you easily imagine how living in Longyearbyen must have been «way back when».

Culinary romance

Several of the restaurants and cafes in Longyearbyen have offers suitable for a couple in love. You can enjoy a romantic dinner for two, for instance at the historical Funktionærmessen Restaurant at the newly renovated hotel Funken Lodge, in Vinterhagen restaurant at Mary Ann’s Polarrigg, one of the restaurants at Huset, or in the restaurant Gruvelageret situated to the south of the Longyeardalen valley, with two glaciers as the closest neighbors. To end an amazing day one can also enjoy a chocolate lava cake at the restaurant Kroa, surrounded by candlelight and reindeer fur or relax with a cup of hot cocoa in front of the fire place at Polfareren restaurant.

You can easily fall in love with our little town, which – despite its size – is somewhat a metropole. Hardly any other small, remote town with approx. 2.000 inhabitants can offer such a wide variety of cafes, restaurants and activities as Longyearbyen. Add the breath-taking views, the quiet surroundings and all the magic of this place…

Welcome to Longyearbyen!
