Welcome to Nordover Art Centre and Cinema – a place where you can explore Svalbard’s history and art at the same time. After Galleri Svalbard closed in 2021, its legacy continues with us. Our art exhibitions show how nature, the coal mining industry, and the people of the North have shaped a truly distinctive cultural life. Here, you can experience the Arctic through art, film, and stories from Svalbard’s many historical periods.
Exhibitions
In our largest exhibition hall, we present rotating exhibitions throughout the year, curated by Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum, with accompanying educational programs. Here, you will encounter both established and emerging voices in northern contemporary art, with exhibitions reflecting life in the Arctic regions in diverse ways.
In our second hall, the permanent collection Kåre Tveter: An Artist’s Gaze on Svalbard forms a central part of the art centre’s identity – offering a poetic and atmospheric encounter with Svalbard’s light and landscapes.
Film
Every day we show the short film Cold Coasts: A Brief History of Svalbard Art & Culture, a visually stunning story of how art and culture have shaped today’s Svalbard society. The film spans from the late 16th century to the present day, using both historical archive material and contemporary footage.
The film runs every half hour during our regular opening hours. It lasts 25 minutes, is in English, and is included in the entrance ticket. Tickets for the film alone are also available.
Nordover Cinema also runs a regular film program throughout the year, with screenings every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Visit filmweb.no for schedules and tickets. Longyearbyen Film Club and the Arctic Film Festival also host screenings at Nordover Cinema.
Café + Art = Experience
Take a break at Nordover Café, a pleasant spot with views of Platåfjellet, Skjæringa and Longyearbyen’s busiest street. Enjoy locally roasted coffee, sweet treats, and a relaxing Arctic atmosphere.
Explore the art in our exhibitions and shop, or bring your laptop for a quiet working or reading session. Families are warmly welcome – we have drawing supplies and small activities for children.
Shop
Our shop offers a wide selection of art, crafts and design from the Arctic. We sell handmade items by independent Arctic artists – everything from ceramics and textiles to graphics, jewellery, and literature. Here, you can also find Nordover own merchandise and gift cards, meaningful souvenirs and beautiful gifts – with all purchases supporting the creative diversity of the Arctic.
