Green Dog Svalbard is located in Bolterdalen and being managed by Martin Munck & Karina Bernlow. We came to Svalbard after many years in East Greenland, where we made a living from hunting and tourism.
Green Dog separates itself from other commercial dog kennels in Svalbard, since our dogs are a mix between the Greenland dog and husky – and also, since our family, consisting of 2 adults and 4 children – and all of our guides – are living at the kennel all year round. We put the welfare of the dogs above all, so it was a natural choice to live at the kennel, in order to be present with our 4 legged friends all the time.
When our dogs retire, we put great effort into finding new families for them, and this has resulted in many happy relationships. You can read about some of our pensioners on our blog at www.greendog.no.
Our dog kennel is divided up into smaller kennels, so each of our guides are in charge of his own kennel with 6 dog teams (30 dogs), that only he uses on tours. This means that the sled trips consists of relatively small groups of max 8 guests- and always with the guides’ own dogs. We believe in and support short travelled food, and we catch part of the dog and human food ourselves.
All of our dog houses and dog sledges are homemade and built on the spot. The dog sledge is a modernized edition of the Greenland hunting sled and based on techniques used by Inuit hunters for decades. All of this creates a different and very personal atmosphere for our visitors. It is not unusual that you will see Martin building dog sledges or meet our children playing all over the kennel.
We are often visited by local school classes and kindergartens, which the place clearly shows, with its own trampoline, swings and sandbox. We even have an outdoor kindergarten, visiting us daily during Spring and Summer. At Green Dog, you will usually find puppies in all ages year round and this is something that puts a smile on the faces of all of our visitors.
We look forward to your visit!

The dark days are perfect for seeing Northern lights - and getting away from the lights of town makes stars and northern lights brighter and clearer. You will be going out with a team of sledge dogs who can sense the first cold.

In pairs, you will take turns mushing (driving a dog sledge team) a team of 5-6 dogs. You will experience the dynamics of the dog-sledge team and will most likely be surprised to see that dogs as tough as these can be so kind and adoring.
