About

Experience one of Longyearbyen’s iconic mountains and enjoy spectacular panoramic views over the town, surrounding valleys, and the dramatic Arctic landscape. This hike is a great choice for guests who want a memorable mountain experience close to the city center, with a strong local story and a car-free start.

We begin directly from Longyearbyen’s center and make our way toward Platåfjellet at 424 meters above sea level.
Along the route, we pass several well-known landmarks, including the church, the historic cable car supports, and Varden viewpoint, which gives you the first glimpse of the views waiting above.
Your guide will share stories about Longyearbyen’s pioneers, the coal mining history, and how John Munro Longyear helped shape this unique Arctic settlement.

At the summit, you will have wide views over Hiorthfjellet, Adventdalen, and the colorful houses of Longyearbyen below.
This is a rewarding hike with a great payoff: a true Arctic experience without having to travel far from town.
