About

Our hike begins in Nybyen, at the upper end of Longyearbyen.
From here, we make our way into the valley and towards Sarkofagen, the mountain situated between Larsbreen and Longyearbreen.

The route takes us through varied Arctic terrain, including riverbeds, moraine, loose rock and a bit steeper mountain sections.
Depending on the season and current conditions, parts of the route may also take us across or alongside glacier ice.

We continue around Sarkofagen, gaining approximately 500 metres of elevation along the way.
The route offers changing views of Larsbreen, Longyearbreen, Longyearbyen and the surrounding valleys and mountains.
On clear days, there are also views towards Isfjorden.

During the hike, your guide will share information about the glaciers, geology, local wildlife and the mining history that has shaped the area around Longyearbyen.

We will stop along the way for a warm lunch, hot drinks and short breaks before continuing the route back towards Longyearbyen.

This is a physically demanding hike covering approximately 9 kilometres with around 500 metres of elevation gain. The terrain is uneven and can include steeper, loose or slippery sections. Participants should be comfortable hiking for several hours in mountain terrain and changing Arctic weather conditions.

No previous glacier experience is required, but a good level of fitness and suitable hiking footwear are necessary.

What is included:
Transfers from and to your hotel, hot drinks and snacks, warm lunch, certified local guide with polar bear protection, safety equipment, micro spikes when required, walking poles, head lamps and Search & Rescue insurance.

What to bring:
Warm and sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, wool base layer, windproof jacket, outdoor pants, hat, buff, windproof mittens/gloves, backpack and water bottle. We recommend bringing an extra warm layer, such as a puffy jacket or warm sweater.

Important info:
The route can be adjusted due to weather, snow and glacier conditions, river crossings and the presence of wildlife.
Your pick-up time depends on your hotel’s location, so please allow for a slight variation in the scheduled time.

We are not able to offer a refund due to sickness, cancelled or delayed flights or other circumstances outside our control. We therefore recommend having valid travel insurance that covers such events.
