Arctic autumn in Svalbard

When visiting Longyearbyen, we recommend staying for at least 6–7 days to truly have time to enjoy, explore, and experience everything Svalbard has to offer! This weekly itinerary is full of inspiration for planning your next Svalbard adventure.

Toward the end of August, we enter the “golden autumn” in Svalbard. This is our short but intense version of autumn which barely lasts a full month, but which in return can offer immensely beautiful autumn coloured landscapes, and you can choose from many exciting experiences. The days are long and bright, ending with stunning sunsets. Although nature is probably the main reason to visit Svalbard, don’t forget the small “big city” of Longyearbyen, which offers a rich cultural life and exciting food and drink experiences. September is especially lively, with events such as the literature festival and the world’s northernmost Pride festival.

We’ve put together a sample itinerary for inspiration. Remember, this is your adventure! You can tailor the days exactly as you wish. Already know your travel dates? See an overview of bookable activities here

Towards the end of August and the start of September, Svalbard enters the season we like to nickname “the golden autumn”. This is our short but intense version of autumn which barely lasts a full month, but which in return can offer immensely beautiful autumn coloured landscapes.

Day 1: Arrival and Discovery of Longyearbyen

Check-in
Upon arrival in Longyearbyen, you check in at your chosen accommodation. There are many options, from guesthouses to more exclusive hotels.

Explore Longyearbyen
After check-in, it’s time to get to know the town. A great option is a walking tour, either on your own or with a guide. You can also join a sightseeing tour by bus or minibus. Longyearbyen has more to offer than you might expect!

Dinner
Who would have thought that in the world’s northernmost town, you could choose from exciting culinary experiences from around the globe? In fact, two of Norway’s best restaurants are located here: Huset and Gruvelageret. A perfect way to end your first day!

Day 2: Fjord, Mountains, and Calm

Head out on an adventure – across the fjord and up the mountain
The day begins with kayaking across the fjord. Then comes a steep and rocky climb of nearly 1,000 meters in elevation. Along the way, you’ll pass the old mining town Ørneredet. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Arctic landscape.

Relaxing evening
After an active day out in nature, it’s nice to unwind. Why not bring a book and find a cosy chair at your hotel? Most accommodations have dedicated areas for relaxation and comfort.

Day 3: Culture, Shopping, and Culinary Experiences

Storytelling and History
Start the day with a visit to Mine 3, where you’ll gain a unique insight into Svalbard’s long and proud mining history. Continue to the Svalbard Museum to immerse yourself in the archipelago’s geology, flora, and fauna, or visit the North Pole Expedition Museum to learn about the history and the importance of the Arctic expeditions. At the Nordover art gallery, you can enjoy paintings and watercolours by artists such as Kåre Tveter.

Shopping and Lunch
Maybe it’s time for a bit of shopping? Longyearbyen offers a varied selection of stores, from exclusive outdoor gear to locally produced crafts and souvenirs. When it’s time for lunch, there are plenty of great options, whether you’re after a hearty meal or just a good cup of coffee.

Relaxing Evening
In the evening, a visit to Svalbard Church is recommended. It’s open to everyone and offers both peace and a sense of community. For dinner: the Winter Garden at Mary Ann’s Polarrigg, a place that combines rustic charm with elegant flavours and local ingredients.

Day 4: Dog Sledding and the World’s Northernmost Brewery

Dog Sledding on Wheels
It’s time for dog sledding, a classic Svalbard experience. Feel the energy of the dogs as they pull you through the colourful autumn landscape.

Tour and Beer Tasting
In the afternoon, visit the world’s northernmost brewery, Svalbard Brewery. Here you’ll taste locally brewed beer, made with glacier water and lots of love. A perfect warm-up before dinner at Restaurant Polfareren, with a menu that both surprises and delights.

Day 5: Cod Fishing and Arctic Sauna

Cod Fishing Trip by Open Boat
Join a fishing trip in the areas around Longyearbyen and experience the dramatic coastal landscape where mountains plunge straight into the sea. September is peak season for cod, so your chances of a good catch and great photos are high! Keep an eye out for whales and seabirds while you're out on the water.

Arctic Sauna or Ice Bath with Barbecue
Later, a unique Arctic experience awaits. Start with a warm and relaxing sauna, followed by a refreshing cold plunge! Alternatively, you can join an evening swim along the coast of Spitsbergen, followed by grilled food and scenic views.

Day 6: Glacier Hike and Wilderness Dinner

Glacier Hike by Boat and Wildlife Spotting
Join a trip that combines it all: boating, wildlife, and glaciers! You’ll cross Isfjorden in a comfortable RIB with panoramic views and might encounter wildlife along the way. The tour passes Trygghamna, known for the bird cliff Alkhornet and its history as a safe harbour for whalers.

The highlight is a hike on Harrietbreen, where you’ll learn about glaciers and glacier hiking, surrounded by majestic nature. The trip ends with a warm lunch onboard before returning to Longyearbyen, always keeping an eye out for wildlife.

Dinner in a Trapper’s Cabin
The evening ends at Camp Barentz, a faithful replica of Wilhelm Barentsz’s trapper’s cabin. After a 15-minute drive, the peace of the wilderness takes over. Here, you’ll be served reindeer stew and captivating stories around the fire.

Day 7: Final Impressions and Departure

Morning in Town
Spend your last morning strolling around Longyearbyen. Maybe there’s a gallery, café, or shop you haven’t had time to visit? Or perhaps you’d like to take one last photo of the autumn colours and mountains before you leave?

Departure
It’s time to say goodbye to Svalbard—for now. Be sure to get a window seat on the plane so you can enjoy the stunning landscape from above. We hope you return home with memories for a lifetime—and that you’ll come back one day to experience another season in the Arctic.
